Background
Collegiately, Riley won two national championships — one as a player and one as a coach — and three bowl games. Riley spent two seasons (1997-98) as the head coach at Oregon State, where he led the Beavers to their best record in 27 years. Riley served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator-quarterbacks coach at Southern California (1993-96).

In 1986, Riley was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Northern Colorado. He was a coach at Linfield College (1977-1982) in McMinnville, Ore., winning the 1982 NAIA championship. Riley served as a graduate assistant at Whitworth College (1976) in Spokane, Wash., and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at California (1975).

As a high school athlete, Riley helped lead Corvallis High to state championships in football, basketball, and baseball as a senior. In college, he played defensive back under Paul (Bear) Bryant at Alabama (1971-74). During that period, the Crimson Tide won the 1973 national crown. Riley graduated from Alabama (1975) with a bachelor's degree in social science and earned his master's degree from Whitworth (1977).
