UNION-TRIBUNE
November 21, 2005
At the ceremony's conclusion, a powder-blue banner bearing the Chargers'
lightning bolt insignia, the number 19 and the name "Alworth" was unveiled
high in Qualcomm Stadium behind the west end zone.
How apt. Going high to make pass receptions and taking them into end
zones was Lance Alworth's signature during his nine seasons with the Chargers,
beginning in 1962.
At halftime of their game yesterday against the Buffalo Bills, the Chargers
formally retired Alworth's jersey No. 19. He becomes the second Chargers
player to have his jersey retired, joining Dan Fouts, whose No. 14 is
displayed opposite Alworth's No. 19 at the stadium's west end.
Alworth was introduced yesterday by Chargers President and Chief Executive
Officer Dean Spanos and John Hadl, who threw most of the 81 touchdown
passes Alworth caught during his time here.
"You absolutely were the greatest receiver of all, in my thinking, and
I know all the guys standing behind me would agree," Hadl said.
This being the Chargers' "Alumni Day," dozens of the team's former players
had joined Alworth on the field for the program honoring him.
Alworth said he was particularly pleased to be introduced by Hadl. "I
wish you all could feel what I am feeling," Alworth told the crowd. "This
is a wonderful, wonderful day that Dean has done for me."
Alworth, 65, recognized the Chargers' origins in the American Football
League by saluting two of the AFL's founding franchise owners who were present
yesterday, Barron Hilton of the Chargers and Ralph Wilson of the Bills.
Before he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys after his nine seasons in
San Diego, Alworth said, he had not had an opportunity to say goodbye to
this city.
"I want you to know how much you've meant to me," he told the crowd,
which had afforded him an ovation lasting at least a minute.
