John Carney named Chargers NFL Man of the Year 1999
Thirty-one finalists are vying for the 1999
title of NFL Man of the Year, the only league award that recognizes
a
player’s off-field community service as well
as his playing excellence. This year’s finalists have demonstrated
an
outstanding balance in their lives between civic
and professional responsibilities.
Once again, the Chargers have nominated placekicker John Carney as the team's Man of the Year.
OFF THE FIELD: It’s no fluke that San Diego Charger kicker, John Carney, has been named NFL Man of the Year for the past four years. Carney has demonstrated outstanding community service in San Diego since he joined the team as a free agent in 1990. Though Carney gives endless hours of his personal time to help a wide range of worthwhile causes, his main devotion is to Fresh Start Surgical Gifts. Fresh Start provides, facilitates and supports reconstructive surgery to children who suffer from physical deformities. In 1992, Carney started the KickStart for Kids program, which has generated more than $600,000 for Fresh Start in the last seven years.
Recently, Carney introduced a brand new program at Children’s Hospital called “Lids for Kids.” This program is an effort to raise funds to purchase hats for the children in the cancer care center who have lost their hair as a result of chemo-therapy treatments. To kick off the program, Carney and teammates Darren Bennett and David Binn shaved their heads in tribute to the kids.
Carney also hosts several annual events, including the Kicks on the Green golf tournament, the KickStart Your Heart charity motorcycle ride, Shoot for the Stars billiard tournament and the ABCD Kicking Camp for the community.
ON THE FIELD: John Carney is the Chargers’ all-time leading scorer with 1008 points and he is the team’s all-time leading field goal kicker. He has a career 81.47 field goal percentage, making him the NFL’s all-time second most accurate field goal kicker with at least 100 career kicks. He currently holds 11 Chargers’ regular-season kicking records.
A blue-ribbon panel headed by NFL Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE will review the accomplishments of the 31 finalists and name the 1999 NFL Man of the Year during Super Bowl XXXIV week in January.
The winner will receive $25,000 to donate to his selected charity. Each finalist will receive a $1,000 contribution towards a charity of his choice.
