02.12.02 - The Chargers have signed former Notre Dame fullback Joey Goodspeed to a one-year deal, the team announced on Tuesday.
The Chargers will be Goodspeed's third NFL team. He originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an un-drafted rookie free agent prior to the 2000 season. He spent part of the 2000 season on the Steelers' practice squad. In 2001, he signed with New Orleans and went to training camp with the Saints.
Goodspeed, 6-1, 247, spent his entire collegiate career (1996-99) at Notre Dame. As a senior in 1999, he started eight games and rushed for 59 yards on 22 carries while catching 12 passes for 91 yards. He played in all 12 games as a junior in 1998, rushing for 202 yards on 29 carries.
Joey Allen Goodspeed was born on Feb. 22, 1978 in Berwyn, Illinois. He was a three-year starter at fullback and linebacker at Oswego High School in Oswego, Illinois. As a senior, he was named to the Super 25 All-Area team by the Chicago Sun Times after rushing for 1,296 yards and 21 touchdowns and averaging 18 tackles per game as a linebacker. As a junior, he was an all-conference pick, rushing for 1,076 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Goodspeed graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in management.
